Before buying a device, describe the job
Specifications help compare tools after the job is clear. Write down your tasks, connections and working environment before comparing products.

List frequent tasks
Observe a normal week and separate frequent requirements from occasional wishes. Describe actual applications, files and workflows rather than asking for vaguely better performance.
Check the connections
Confirm power, ports, displays, networks and existing accessories. Include adapters, required software and setup time when comparing total effort, not just the sticker price.
Compare the same work
Where possible, try the same task on each candidate. Notice typing, reading, noise and portability. Separate requirements from preferences so one appealing feature does not hide a critical limitation.
Try one small change
Choose one idea that fits your situation, try it on a limited scale and record what you learn. A useful practice should be easy to review and adjust. Share your experience in the comments, including the context and any limitations.
